Upcoming Bee-Related Events

Each year, in addition to our monthly meetings, SFBA conducts a two-part “Introduction to Beekeeping” class for members and non-members who want to learn more about beekeeping.  We participate in the Randall Museum’s annual “Bug Day” event in April, we have a club picnic in September and we have a holiday party in December.  We also sponsor an urban beekeeping yahoo group, which is open to members and non-members alike.  We periodically sponsor, and co-sponsor with other organizations, special talks and educational events related to honey bees, beekeeping and/or native bees.

General  Meeting - Parasite Presentation &

Mid-Season Hive Status

Randall Museum Randall Room

Our July meeting begins with a presentation from two SF State masters degree students about a new honey bee parasite they are studying. They would like to monitor managed and feral hives for the presence and effect of the parasite on colony health and vitality. Attend to learn the latest on this possible new problem for beekeepers.

Following their presentation, we will open a discussion around member questions, comments and concerns regarding their hives midway though the year. Spring build up should be complete, colonies mature. What can be done next to minimize swarming, pests & disease to maximize honey production?
